Georgia Power and DeKalb Emergency Management Agency (DEMA)
Presently, there are 144,000 out of 317,000 customers without power in the DeKalb area. Georgia Power and DeKalb Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) have also communicated that the DeKalb area has been one of the hardest hit. DEMA shared that there are 80+ roads that are currently blocked by downed trees or power lines. That could impact school bus travel. Tree removal on school driveways/other areas that provide access to the school remain top priority for the Operations Team.
School Nutrition Department
The School Nutrition Department has expressed concern about the loss of power at more than 60 schools and the impact that this may have had on refrigerators and freezers that house perishable goods. The school nutrition staff will begin assessment of the food tomorrow.

  1. Thank you for these stats Stan – clearly it makes sense for school to be cancelled tomorrow. I sure do wish DCSD would have provided a fraction of this data to help keep parents informed.

  2. They said the Schools were closed. Obviously the teachers are not just taking a vacation day.

  3. Children will have 180 days of school and teachers will have 190 days.

I hope that the schools threw away all the food that was in the refrigerator. That would not be right to service all those kids that food that has been sitting in the refrigerator for this period of time.

Stan, thanks for the information. You are greatly appreciated. How many schools have leakage in the building? There are some schools with leaks when it rains prior to Irma. Is your report complete? Will the inspectors place a TrustED validation on this report that no schools have rain leakage?

  6. I don’t know how many schools have leaks. Given our history, I doubt we will fix all the leaks.

  7. Stan, what is the plan? There is only 1 inclement weather day in the calendar and we don’t what winter will bring.

Dr. Green was just on WABE radio. He said extending the length of the school day could be a way to make up the lost days.

  9. Extending the school day is an option except for those students doing stuff right after school … especially middle school.
