Will a student’s performance on the Georgia Milestones state standardized test affect their promotion to the next grade? As discussed here, “Student Promotion – Whose Decision Is It?“, the state never enforced grade promotion requirements saying, “Students who failed those tests in the past could appeal to local panels, which often approved the students’ promotion”
SB 355 allows students to opt out of state mandated assessments for serious health issues.
Tim Jarboe, director of assessment and accountability for the Clarke County School District, makes a plea to the public to not opt out of the Georgia Milestones. Kay Draper Hutchinson, a former school counselor, recently published these thoughts and instructions on opting out of the Georgia Milestones.
Update (April 15, 2016) – Danelle Chamberlin is a full-time 4th grade teacher and a Ph.D. student at the University of Georgia in the College of Education’s Department of Educational Theory and Practice. In this piece published by Maureen Downey on AJC’s Get Schooled, “More Georgia parents should opt their children out of testing“, Chamberlin explains why the Georgia Milestones exams are not helpful to parents, students or teachers.

EOCs are state standardized Milestones tests. The student would be taking this test anywhere in Georgia.
