The Calendar Committee “was comprised of a variety of stakeholder groups, including students, parents, community/business partners, school-level staff, and district level advisers.” The Calendar Committee discussed the number of days per year, number of days per semester, inclement weather/emergency days, testing windows, spring breaks, holidays, school breaks, and other metro area school districts’ calendars.

What is the purpose of having Election Day off? It’s a hardship on many families to have to take a day off in the middle of the week. It would make much more sense to have that extra day during Winter Break.
Election Day – I asked the Calendar Committee that same question. (Note: calendar committee description updated in post). They said, “The community feedback was that parents want their children to be off from school on election day.”
Thanks for posting, Stan. But my question continues to be…why do we keep creeping earlier and earlier in August??? Why do we need a whole week off at Thanksgiving a month after we have a full 5 day weekend for “Fall break”? Wed-Fri for Thanksgiving break is really all that most adults take off work; and Fri-Mon Fall break would give a total of 3 days we can add to the summer break in August. Buses running when it is still 95 degrees is miserable. Especially that first week when they are all slower. Please encourage your colleagues to stop trying to shorten summer. Thanks for all you do.
Shorten Summer – Why are the Summers getting shorter. I’m guessing due to the loss of academic skills and knowledge over the course of summer holidays especially at schools with our most vulnerable children. I’ve noticed the divide on this is generally split along socio-economic lines.
Is election day an off day because schools are often used as polling places? Given school shootings in recent times, I can understand not wanting to have students in the building when you are going to have a lot of traffic without much control coming through.
Election Day – Behind closed doors, security always weighs in heavily on decisions. Publicly, the position is probably parents want to set an example and take their children with them to vote … which is true. However, the security vulnerability is no small issue.
Mr. Jester,
In some of the small schools. the polling place is actually inside of the school. This means that you have the problem of trying to keep voters out of the areas that contain the students. This can be a major task. Also, schools are told to make sure that you have parking spaces available for voters. So in some cases, you are trying to get your school busses loaded and unloaded with voters trying to drive into the same lots. In the times we live, school security most always be a concern. When it is a majot election, it can be very hard to manage the crowds.
Hey Stan,
When were the stakeholders surveyed? Are those results posted somewhere? Are the members of the calendar committee listed somewhere? It seems the same parents serve on all the committees and serve year after year. It would be helpful to know who is serving on the various stakeholder committees (calendar, technology, SACS, the regional S.P.A.C.E.S. teams, etc) and their contact info so other stakeholders can share thoughts and ideas about the various topics.
This past February the board approved the 2016-17 and 2017-18 school calendars. Sometime before that there was an online survey with 8,050 responses. I don’t have the names of the people on the calendar committee. I’ll try to release those things as they come up.
A five day fall break split across two weeks is terrible! It’s so disruptive for learning. And 5 days at thanksgiving is ridiculous too. I’d rather have fewer breaks and a long we summer.
And there is no sense on being off on Election Day on an off year.
All these random days off and mini breaks are hard on working parents.
When do report cards come out?
Report cards go out with the student. Schools can differ. Talk to or email your student’s teacher or principal. Best place to look is online on Infinite Campus.
I found out. Thank you
When do I sign my son up for the Lottery PreK? I don’t want to miss out. I called the school, but they don’t know either. They told me to check this site, but I cannot find any thing about when and where to sign up. What paperwork do I need? Thank you
PreK enrollment is sometime around March. It is one day and one day only. You sign up that day and there is a lottery at the end of the day. I currently don’t see that day scheduled on the calendar.
Open enrollment for schools of choice in the DeKalb County School District will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11 and continue through 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22
