DeKalb Schools administration stated the school district will begin the transition to a hybrid learning model if the Cases Per 100K (Last 2 Weeks) is below 100 for 14 days straight. How do we calculate that?
The data comes from the Georgia Department of Public Health Daily Status Report. If you roll over DeKalb, you will see the statistics for DeKalb County. If you roll over the bar graph on the right, you will get the Confirmed Cases for that day.
Cases (last 2 weeks): The sum of the Confirmed Cases for the last 14 days
Population: 793,154 – Using 2018 U.S. Census data to derive population
Cases per 100k (last 2 weeks) = 100,000 x Cases (last 2 weeks) / Population
CASES PER 100K (LAST 2 WEEKS)
It’s been 4 months since the Shelter In Place time period and it was the last time DeKalb Schools has seen less than 100 cases per 100K (last 2 weeks). Here are the cases per 100K (last 2 weeks) for every day since July.
57 CASES PER DAY = 100 cases per 100K
If DeKalb County averages 57 cases per day for 14 days, that will be 100 cases per 100K (last 2 weeks). Since July, DeKalb has gone under 57 cases for the day half a dozen times.

Gov. Kemp and Dr. Toomey just did a Covid news conference. It had been 8 and half weeks since their last one.
@ Staffing Question
I also have a question.
Enrollment is down. Will staff be moved to other schools? This usually happens every year. If people are going to be moved, they need to be informed.

My cousin teaches in Cherokee. He caught it. He can’t even handle his dog right now so he had to have someone come take her. This isn’t a joke of a disease. 9 have another teacher friend in Gwinnett who was hospitalized because of COVID-19. How are her students getting what they need with her out for who knows how long. Frankly, the word I’m getting from Gwonnett is that teachers are sitting at their desks talking to webcams. Students who are in the buildings are on their devices watching the teacher teach via Zoom so the students at home get the same lesson.
Why rush this? Why put people at risk? It is too soon to think about forcing educators back into buildings, much less students.
^^ Joy, schools just had to submit their data to the palace, so the reassignments should be coming soon.
I knew enrollment was down, but didn’t realize it was down 5% as the AJC reported — I hope layoffs can be avoided!
Thank you DWS2. I appreciate the information. Some educators drop off their children on their way to work. Some people car pool. If DeKalb is planning to reopen F2F, school based people need to know where they will be located. Some years schools have been able to keep extra staff. It doesn’t seem like that will be possible this year.
@New Normal Won’t Be Normal at All
Not getting “my way” at all. My way would have been back to in-person instruction 5 days a week back in August. But this is at least a long overdue step in the right direction. Hoping DeKalb stays strong and doesn’t give in to the cries of the vocal, fear-porn addicted minority on this one and gets things back to the “new normal” as soon as possible.
Stan, you along with the board members should know that the numbers of COVID-19 cases will increase with Thanksgiving & Christmas approaching. Most of the district employees won’t show up or going out on leave with no one to teach the kids. How can people lives be based on a graph chart. Every district that attempted to open or opened now has a COVID-19 case!!!!! So sad what you all are doing to the employees.
@Renee
Are you seriously worried about “a” Covid case? Like, one case? Talk about a low bar! What about “a” case of the seasonal flu in a school? A 31-year old Vanderlyn Elementary teacher actually DIED from the flu in February. Were you up in arms about the district putting “people lives” at risk by continuing to keep schools open during flu season? If not, why don’t you care enough about “people lives” to demand that schools keep teachers and students safe from the risk of the seasonal flu, or bus or car rides to school, etc.?
Obviously, if schools open, there will be additional cases. Just like there are right now with schools NOT open! This is a virus, it’s going to be here, likely forever, just like every other virus. If you aren’t willing to accept that FACT, just stay holed up in your house for the rest of your life, away from ANYTHING else that might cause you harm moving forward. Doesn’t sound like much of a way to live to me, but hey, at least you won’t catch Covid!
Also, show me the districts or private schools that have opened that have had these massive, devastating outbreaks of Covid, with the hospitalizations & deaths that we have all been assured will follow. Seriously, show me. I’m sure it won’t be easy because they don’t exist.
