Austin Elementary School Replacement Project Update

Austin Elementary School Replacement Project Update
By: Joshua Williams
Title: DeKalb Schools, Chief Operating Officer
The project is currently in the final design phase where all of the building and site elements are being detailed for construction. The architect has issued a set of 80% construction documents to the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) for their milestone review, and the civil engineer has released drawings to DeKalb County for a Land Disturbance Permit. The final 100% set of construction drawings are anticipated to be complete this May. Upon final review of these documents by the GaDOE, the District will receive a final approval letter to proceed, and the project will be issued for formal solicitation.
It is anticipated that the project will be presented for Board approval at its August Board meeting for a targeted construction start this fall 2017.
In conjunction with this project, the City of Dunwoody must construct two new baseball fields adjacent to Peachtree Charter Middle School. The City has issued their RFP for construction services and is targeting completion of the new fields to coincide with the Austin construction start in September. Additionally, the City is planning an addition to the Dunwoody Nature Center that is adjacent to the new Austin Elementary School, and they are planning their construction to be complete so the opening of the new Center can coincide with the opening of the school.

Note: Mr. Williams said the drawings were given to DeKalb County for a Land Disturbance Permit, but within the Dunwoody city limits, that permit is given by the city. I’m seeking clarity on this. –Stan

New portable classroom delivered to Austin ES today. Right in the middle of the field … right before field day … nice

  2. Is there any update on this?

Construction on the new AES will begin once the new baseball fields at PCMS are completed. The school district agreed to give Dunwoody a little over $4 million to relocate the ball fields.
Most recently, the city bid out the construction for the fields but nothing came in under $7 million. Crier: http://m.thecrier.net/mobile/news/article_ce88940e-3f51-11e7-9395-fbd1c485be4c.html

  4. So since nothing has happened since May – and the “September 1” deadline is way in jeopardy – what now?

  5. School district can’t move forward until the ballfields at PCMS are built.

  6. So we’re basically going to be pushed back a year – or indefinitely?
    I love government.

The schedule of the AES rebuild is in the hands of the Dunwoody City Council right now.
