  1. Curious. How is it that we can know that only 20-30% of students in grades 1-8 are considered proficient enough to move on, yet according to your recent post, graduation rates countywide have jumped from 57% to 71%. What kind of magic are we pulling off in our high schools? Or do we have a much more serious dropout rate than we care to admit?

  2. The Georgia Milestones are considered a tougher, more rigorous test than the CRCT and EOCT. I talked about Student Promotion last year when the State education department spokesman Matt Cardoza said, “Students who failed those tests in the past could appeal to local panels, which often approved the students’ promotion”.
So, generally speaking, students in Georgia are promoted to the next grade whether they are proficient or not. The jump in the graduation rate can be attributed to the elimination of the GHSGT (Georgia High School Graduation Test).

  3. Once Again, the testing correlates directly with the income level of the parents.
    Wow, how informative!
Testing is a HUGE INDUSTRY and billionaires are raking it in.
We continue to talk about the rigor of content, only to push most children to fail from Kindergarten on with developmentally inappropriate content. The set scores are often decided before the tests are developed, or set after all children complete the tests. We have non-educators running public education with mass funding from Gates, Broad, Walton & Co. to ramrod their agenda. Children must fail to continue this profit sucking exploitation of our test prep factories (schools).
Read up on why over 200,000 parents Opted-Out children from such high stakes testing for which months are waisted in test prep. There will be more across the US this school year.
Manipulating scores up and down have serious consequences with eligibility criteria for children with disabilities and TAG kids. But, non-educators corpProfiteers could care less. They earn $M on children in poverty, failing schools, more tests, syphoning confidential student data for sale & test prep materials, etc…
Please wake up and smell the coffee. I have been a career educator who has spent much time researching the corp profit exploitation of our children. GA is still snoozing and few are aware. Take time to educate yourself.

  4. H.A.Hurley, Please post the “income level of the parents” you are referring to.

  5. Income levels correlate strongly to high or low test scores. This cannot possibly be news to you. High income areas = high test scores, children in poverty = low test scores. DC has high concentrations of children in poverty vs. significantly high income areas in Dunwoody, Oak Grove, Austin, etc.
Across GA, same outcome. DCS is at the bottom of the Metro areas – surprised? No one is.
DCS had years of dysfunction, fraud, dumb and unethical leaders, golden parachutes for superintendents & inept leadership.
We keep testing, spend $$ on tests, valuable instructional time for test prep and endless weeks/mos of testing…to conclude the above statistics. Guess what? It’s not about educating kids, it’s about the privatization industry surrounding children in poverty and their billionaire corp profiteers.
    Poor kids are worth $M.
Stan, I know that you know this very well.

  6. H.A. Hurley, The data reveals many things. For example, APS is the most property rich district in the metro area and is usually at the bottom of the testing results. Let’s try to stick to “Just the Facts, Ma’am”.

  7. Correlation is not causality (Freakonomics).
Stop Nicolas Cage Before He Kills Again!
The number of Nicholas Cage films and the number of swimming pool drownings in each year is highly correlated.

  8. If you and others are so smart in DCS – How’s it working for us?
Ask the poor teachers who have been mistreated and exploited for years – oh, many are now gone to better systems. Ask folks who are moving as we speak.
You have much work to do, and paying attention to the national education issues is critical to what is happening in DCS. Ignorance is no excuse…remember?
